I had put my 70-200mm lens with a 2x extender on my camera and the only thing I saw coming to this hummingbird feeder were yellow jackets. I thought I might get a shot of one of them flying to the feeder. Then I heard the the sound of hummingbird wings and then this female Ruby-throated Hummingbird swooped down and began to open her beak to frighten the intruder away. As it turned out, it was a baldfaced hornet which are pretty nasty things to mess with.
My first ever photograph that made the Top Twenty!
A baldfaced hornet is worse than a baldfaced liar! This is a delightful picture of the bird - he actually looks agressive and I suppose he is hovering! Well shot!
A FAV... Love the way you caught her in action trying to scare the intruder away.. I have been thinking about buying a 2x extender but wasn't sure it would be a good investment.. After seeing your amazing capture I am buying one!!!!
@moonshadow - Thank you for the follow! I will follow you in kind. I didn't buy the best extender, but it works well. I was disappointed then I discovered that it doesn't work on my kits lens thought. I am not sure if I bought a more expensive Canon extender if it would work on my kits lens or not. I didn't research that. One draw back of the extender is that you lose two stops. The lens I use this with is a 2.8, but using the extender the largest opening is 5.6.
You have the exact same camera as I do - I haven't bought any other lenses yet - I have the 18-55 and the 75-300. I REALLY want to get a 100-400 since of what I like shooting is birds and wildlife. This is a great photo and you have another follow and fav!
