There is a hit TV show in the US called "Last Man Standing" starring Tim Allen. I gave this photo that name because she was the last hummingbird at our feeder. All the others left earlier, but she hung in there way beyond all the others. We felt sorry for her being the only one left, but we remembered that Ruby-throated hummingbirds are solitary. Adults of this species are not social, other than during courtship (which lasts a few minutes); the female also cares for her offspring. Both males and females of any age are aggressive toward other hummingbirds. They may defend territories, such as a feeding territory, attacking and chasing other hummingbirds that enter. It wasn't uncommon to see a hummingbird land on the feeder to see it scared away by another hummingbird protecting the feeder. So we think she enjoyed her days of freedom while they lasted.
Godspeed to the hummingbirds... I haven't seen ours for about a week... finally put out two feeders this summer so they didn't spend all their time chasing another away! Nice shot!
