a day at the beach by summerfield

a day at the beach

this is from last saturday's drive to cobourg, some 95 kilometres (roughly 59 miles) east of toronto. they have a beautiful and clean beach, the Victoria Beach, which is very popular among residents and tourists of cobourg, hosting volleyball tournaments, beach days, family picnics and more. the beach is equipped with a splash park, playground set, park area for eating, local restaurants and a pier. there are lifeguards on duty everyday and it is safe to swim and play in. close to the downtown, tourists can shop in local shops and eat out at many of cobourg's fine dining restaurants.

this was taken as we were leaving the pier. i was hoping to get some silky water shots, but all i got were blank white photos of nothing. turns out, in reading through some of the past discussions on 365, that the best time to do that kind of shot is when there's less light around, like early dawn or late dusk. partner said we'll try to come back and stay the night before the summer is over.

thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for your kind visits and comments; know that i appreciate them a lot.
I like the clouds that you captured to top off the waves and swimmers.

Lovely composition ... I love all of the action going on here. It's a beautiful POV> I don't know how one gets the silky water shots exactly either. I tried when we went to the coast a few weeks ago. Shot in manual in the early morning and evening. And it didn't work for me either time. Guess that I'll talk to the teacher before I go the next time. I still don't mind the small waves tho ... I decided that that is what it really did look like. But at least I want to KNOW how to do it and will try it again. If you break the code, let me know, summerfield. :)

@karenann - of course, KA. you know me, i don't hold back on tips and techniques i pick up around here. i like this shot, too: it has people in the water unlike my previous beaches shots, only boats and waves. it had been raining on and off that day. the other side of us it was clear skies! go figure.

Looks like a beautiful day! I'm not a beach person (it's too hot!) but I wish I was. Lovely shot. 8)

@summerfield No we haven't been east of the city much but we love going for rides and on a nice fall day it might be just the ticket...we've been to Orillia quite often and of course Barrie but it would be nice to see some places where we haven't been yet. thanks again.

This is gorgeous and I find my shots at the sea look ok in any light. The only time I got pure white I had accidentally left the camera on fireworks mode.

Lovely view!

Nice shot- the only time I shot a silky water shot was in 2011 on a waterfall. With my camera it involved putting the ISO on 80 (the lowest my camera will allow) and holding the camera really still- as I have no tripod for it!
