this was taken in 2004 when my sister and i went to san francisco to visit a sick relative. my cousin brought us to the fisherman's wharf when he found out i love seafood. he had a friend who owned one of the stalls inside the market. the bugger couldn't believe it - i ate two dozens of the shrimp, giant ones, mind you, like the ones you see hanging from my mouth there. and a whole giant lobster. with all the trimmings of coleslaw and fries. he was scratching his head and couldn't figure out how so much seafood could disappear into that body. when he asked if i wanted some to take back to his mom's condo where we were staying, i said yes. you'd think I've had enough of it? pfft!
i'm a big eater. and i love good food. when i got my very first paycheck, half of it was spent buying food stuff so that my mother would have at least eaten some good food. i had wanted for us to go and eat at a restaurant but she was not very confident in going out by that time as she had already had her stroke. and every paycheck thereafter was spent on food. she would remind me to buy some clothes and shoes but she'd forget about it whenever i'd tell her i'd rather buy her favourite chocolate marble ice cream.
at the office, my then best friend and i would extort money from the lawyers and we would buy ice cream and pizza and the whole department would have a feast. it was a great way to have more food for less money. my eating prowess was legendary in that office.
one time, one of the lawyers who was quite stingy with money (we called him silas marner) said he would only contribute if i could eat a gallon of ice cream. in one sitting. a gallon all by myself. if i could do that, he pledged to forever contribute ten pesos every time. mind you at that time i only weigh about seventy pounds (yes, i used to be small!). he didn't believe i could do it. another lawyer who was always short of money suddenly pulled out a ten and asked for the other lawyers to put in a bet. the bet was 50 pesos i won't be able to eat a gallon of ice cream, 10 pesos in my favour. ah, people could be so gullible, you know.
so a gallon was purchased, my chosen flavor of rocky road. word spread around to the other departments and before you know it, people were gathered outside our department peeking through the glass walls. the bets by this time had gone up, and my boss even put in his bet. i just ate the darn ice cream at my pace, which was a little bit fast compared to most people - i'm a fast eater, too! the time agreed to was within 30 minutes. hahaha! i finished the gallon container in 20 no sweat! as soon as i was finished i saw the time on the wall clock was 12:30, lunch time! i grabbed by lunch bag which was underneath my desk and jeanna and i walked out to eat our lunch at the cafeteria.
when we came back to our desk, a big pizza pie was waiting for us. when i took my first slice, i asked "who wants to bet i could finish this whole pizza easily in ten minutes?" (the pizza was good for ten people!) none of the lawyers would put in a bet. i thought they also wanted some of the pizza. it was pepperoni after all! when i got home, i told my mother about it. she just laughed.
what did i eat today? hmmm...let me recall. ten small ginger cookies, a bar of white chocolate with hazelnuts, 2 packs of roasted seaweed (15 grams each pack), half a container of pringle and a bagel. that was in the morning. then i had sushi for lunch. then another bar of cadbury fruits and nuts chocolate, a pack of roasted seaweed, a slice of cheesecake (someone had a shower, i was invited :-)) and i finished off the pringle. goodness that's too much sodium i consumed today! i better eat something to offset that sodium. :-) must exercise, too! nah! tomorrow.
lol this just cracked me up! I don't think I could put away a gallon of ice cream, but I am also a huuuuuuuge fan of seafood and could probably match you here ;) I love my some shrimp!
Love the pure pleasure you are getting from your feast, good for you! I work I in a gym where everyone is sooooo controlled over what and when they eat, I never dare say the word 'chocolate' or 'ice cream' !!
Wow! you do have a good appetite!! Mine's good but not that good : ) The story make me laugh and so does the look on he guys face in the background! Great photo, perfect for gluttony!
Awesome story, as usual. Priceless photo, love the look on the person to your right. Until my late twenties I could do the same without gaining an ounce. But I don't believe I could compete with you at all!
@fullcircle - did you want some? thank you, cindy.
@panthora - oh, happy! i'll let you know when i'm around your area. we'll wreak some havoc on the shrimp species! thank you, osia.
