mind you, this photo is in colour, but that's how drab it is on this Christmas day. there was snow last night but it had promptly disappeared by morning. it was a good decision for me to come down to the falls and shoot as there was a bit of sunshine at the time. after i left, it was just a day of grey and cold.
to take this photo, i snuck at a passageway that had 'no pedestrians allowed beyond this gate' sign but the gate was wide open and the view of both falls was just too tempting to pass up. so i walked in. there were more signs telling the public is not allowed. tee-hee, why leave the darn gate open then?
the american side of the falls is on the near left, the canadian falls is off to the far end with the mist obscuring it. the city had to salt off the pavements nearer the canadian falls as the mists could turn into black ice when the temperature hits the minus teens.
a long time ago, like in the early 1990's, we'd come here in december and blocks of ice were falling off the falls. it was kind of surreal. one time a man was leaning too closely and he fell on the river and was lucky enough to have gotten tangled in thick bushes or he would have gone over the falls. another time a teenager tried to commit suicide by jumping, got hold of a humongous block of ice then promptly changed his mind when he realized how cold the water was.
What a great shot. You remind me of me at the Capitol this past week. I still hope to see these falls in person even though it didn't make it into my project...thanks for sharing
Great job and great way to spend the day. Good on you for sneaking through the gate.....no regrets when you can get a shot like this. I think I would have done the same (he he - living on the wild side). Cheers :)
@aurorajane - i think the by-law is largely enforced in the summer when the place is brimming with tourists. for ordinary peeps like us to get this shot, you need to have a real wide lens and you take it from the look out gates, even then this is not the angle you can shoot so you either have half the american falls or half the canadian falls and only part of the river. so i'm happy. thank you, aj.
