I took photos of snow scenes today but also played with lighting a sunflower in bloom from a bouquet of flowers on the table. I like the sunny happy feel this conveys even in the midst of cold, snowy February. It trumped the photo of the old wooden stairs covered in snow, the leading lines of the wrought iron fence with parallel lines where someone had shoveled a path on the sidewalk, and my plans to do an oil and water shot.
@vankrey Thanks Michael. This one was done by opening up the aperture as much as I could and still get enough light, and that essentially blacked out the background (which was actually a granite counter, with a visible bread machine, some of the other flowers, and a sink full of dishes!) The light was so bright that it allowed me to black out the background
Stunning! Sunflowers are one of my favorites! Love the bright yellow against the black background. Very dramatic. I had the same happy "accident" occur with the black background in my Valentine's Day shot. It seemed like magic to me when my tan wall was transformed into a black backdrop to the flower.
@karenpics Thanks! @pflaume Lisa, it's so weird how these 'accidents' happen, isn't it? I feel like I have so much to learn about these relationships, and am enjoying 365 as a way to sort it all out.
@scolgs How interesting you commented on this photo from almost a year ago as I was just thinking about a photo for today and wishing I had something bright and cheery. How weird that I had such similar thoughts almost exactly a year ago! Thanks for your visit and comment, Sarah.

Thank you! Here's my other one in the same spot and you can see the sunflower was the right coloring to really work. http://www.flickr.com/photos/taffyraphael/8501620907/in/photostream
