Haleakala is the volcanic mountain that dominates the eastern side of Maui. When we started out to the top, we could see the sun and these fluffy white clouds. Sadly by the time we reached the peak, 2 and a half hours later, it was totally socked in by mist and rain. Jim did all the driving and I did all the worrying about going off the road! This was one of the more open moments and in the distance, you can see the valley and the western side of the island. Very sad not to be able to see the crater, but the visibility was about 20 feet or less. The good side -- we didn't get sunburned.
Still behind on commenting -- spent this evening judging Get Pushed 74 entries. Please vote! They are great -- and if you get the chance click on the tag get-pushed-74 to see some additional great images.
Tomorrow is whale watching. Hoping for some photos! Wishing Jim and I hadn't both come down with bad colds. Why does that happen on vacations?

What amazing clouds!!! To think we could have joined you in Hawaii, while it's -27 (actual temperature) here . . . it's also 3am and I'm out of battery so I'll have to catch up on your other photos in the morning. Have FUN -- and can't wait to see ALL your photos when you get back. We just bought a book of King Spa entrances for next week :) so we'll have a photo viewing day (or two or three) there,
Beautiful. Sorry you weren't able to see much. I visited there in '98 and loved it. We had very clear weather and could just make out the other islands in the distance.
Breathtaking clouds and view! Driving the mountains there is always an adventure this time of year because of the changing weather. The journey is the joy.
Fantastic capture - love those clouds!! What a shame you couldn't see too much!! Enjoy your whale watching - hope you see a whale and get some great shots!! I went once and it was soooo exciting to see something so huge!!
This is really spectacular. Fav and merry Christmas . I think you get colds traveling from the planes..least it hasn't stopped you from enjoying your vacation.
Spectacular capture!
We were last there in 1985. We drove up the mountain after the long flight from Anchorage Alaska. The twins, about 6 years old and were unaccustomed to long rides in a car on a switch back trail. Every turn, after the first hour of the drive became a double event of throwing up. It was not fun, but defiantly funny. We saw the crater just after sunrise. Also, lots of bikers going down!
isn't it a crazy drive up there?! and all the cyclists? I thought the going up on a bike was crazy and trying to get by them safely was nerve wracking, but watching them fly down - holy smokes! they must have nerves of steel.
have a wonderful Christmas Taffy --------i hope it is filled with joy :)
Hope you'll recover fast and can celebrate healthy, happy holidays!
