Taken standing just under Chicago's Bean (aka Cloud Gate) sculpture in Millennium Park. All those little spots are people. I don't really understand how the reflections seem to go on forever, but it's quite dizzying not just to stand there, but to try to do so and take a photo with your camera looking up.
Thanks for your lovely comments on my simple shot of P3 and the blinds -- the study in shadow and light.
Wow this is amazing, fantastic shot. I know how difficult it is to take a photo looking upwards. I took a photo a while ago from underneath an electricity pylon and it wasn't easy to do without losing my balance.
Very cool! At first I thought the endless reflections must be due to the shape of the bean, but then I saw that you used the fish-eye lens so that probably has a little bit to do with it too. No matter what the explanation it makes for a very interesting shot!!
@olivetreeann Thanks Ann. It's actually not the fisheye effect for once. I used the fisheye lens, but cropped the outer part of silver of the bean out. This is what it looks like standing under there -- dizzying to try to track someone from where they are in reality through all the reflected reflections. Yet the surface is smooth, so it's all done with the overall curve of the sculpture. So unusual and intriguing -- but I get a headache looking up too long!
@taffy Optical illusions, reflections, and the like really are fascinating. This would probably have me falling over backwards! But like you, I'd do what I needed to do to get the shot! This actually reminds me of something I saw in Boston at the Museum of Fine Arts. It was a set of glass jars in a mirrored box and it looked like there were millions of them the way it was set up. I'm trying to remember if I posted them or not...
I saw this from my phone, but couldn't figure it out until now. Super shot! Like a tiger, reflected in a car's banged up chrome hub cap, maybe? Very nicely done.
@taffy YES...I think now we plan to arrive around the 23rd, but I'd like to arrive about the 18th. I'd love a day to shoot with you and JT +?, and I have a couple other things I'd like to do while in town. "Just a week" always goes too fast, so pulling for more! When are you leaving town? We'll keep in touch!
@Weezilou Well, this will be close. We think we have a moving target of a moving date, between May 29 and June 17th. If it's later, then I would be here on the 18th and probably the 19th. We'll have just moved in, so I'm guessing I will not be able to take a lot of time off, but maybe we could work out something where I could meet you in the city somewhere fun, hang out a bit, and then go back to the unpacking. Stay in touch for sure. I'm guessing if you don't make til the 23rd, I may already be heading up to Beaver Island.
@taffy Ken's sitting at his desk working on dates and, having read him your note, he says we can plan to leave the 16th... I'd really like to make this happen! I certainly understand your need to resettle , wrap up all the school work and head out of town! Trust me, I'd be perfectly content to just meet...to meet. And we also plan to come back through around September sometime...then back up north until the snow flies :) Egad...have I just mapped our upcoming *year*?!
@Weezilou Good, me too! So, if it really gets to be complicated, I'm around in September and only working 25% time as I phase for retirement. But, hopefully, we'll be able to meet in Chicago -- even if it's just for tea but hoping a photowalk.
@taffy Ken's still working on it...and you're going to love the flexibility that comes with retirement! I say that, yet we seem to be busier than ever! Well, I don't have to tell you about that!
It's not exactly the same dizzying warp- but it sure gets your brain going!
