I went into town to bid a good friend safe travels as she was leaving Beaver Island for the rest of the season. Since I got there before she did, I thought I'd use the time to photograph since both ferries were in the dock. The 'little' ferry is the Beaver Islander in the foreground. The "big" ferry in the background is the Emerald Isle - newer and much more comfortable. It took me a few days to get to processing, but I had liked the juxtaposition of the two with the people waiting in line to board and thought it would work best in b&w.
Thanks all, for all your positive comments and favs for the daddy longlegs insect I posted yesterday. His expression was so funny it was hard not to project emotions onto it!
Intriguing capture, it was not until I read your narrative that I realized that there were two ferries here. My eye initially made me think that the background was a building...which of course it is obviously not. Note to self, observe don't just suppose!
Your little port reminds me of the ferry landing on Orcas island in Washington. There's something magical about taking a ferry to one's special island! Great image of the two ships.
So interesting to see the two ferries together like this with the people queuing up to board. Looks timeless with this conversion- good choice! How long does it take by ferry to get to Beaver Island? I guess quite a while as you normally choose to fly. Lake Michigan must be huge - must check it out.
@pamknowler The ferry is lovely -- the large one -- just under 2 hours from Charlevoix on the mainland to the BI harbor. But the flight is 17 minutes, so more practical if we don't have too much time (or if the waves are really high).
@redy4et Yes -- it does have the same feeling. Lots of activity, then nothing for hours or days, then lots again. Until end of August...then pretty quiet til the following summer (and it closes down Dec 20 - March 18th or so when the ice breaker comes through).
Of course, Beaver island must have the Beaver Islander. Great for black and white with so many line patterns to observe, as well as the people line to observe.
Just been looking up where Beaver Island is. I can see why you like it there. Love this pair of ferries, the juxtaposition is just right with the nose of the smaller one there at the front.
@joansmor Yes, day trippers are fairly frequent. They can do a tour of the island, hang out at the beach, etc. However, it's long enough that it makes more sense for people to visit at least overnight. And there is a dock for private boats, so they are part of the tourists, and the one-week renters, and then the longer term up to seasonal ones. It's pretty eclectic, but only 500 year round folks.
Interesting tale to go with this shot. I like the juxtaposition of the two ferries and the composition works well in b&w. Sounds like a lovely spot for a holiday.
@tunia Interesting! Charlevoix is the jumping off point for the Ferry and for the flights to the island. The ferry comes in right on the main street on the harbor side of course.
Great juxtaposition and I particularly like the composition with the fence telling the eye the route to travel. It reminds me also of the ferries to Orcas Island in the Puget Sound...so many fond memories of that trip including several with orcas!
