I learned how to spot these today, by looking for the teeny brown droppings at the base of green beach plants. Those are a sign the caterpillar is or at least was there. Took me awhile to figure out which end was the head, so I have a lot where the wrong end was in focus! On black and larger, you can pick out what look like eyes.
Good image. We're very familiar with these monarch caterpillars, having raised lots of them to the butterfly stage a few years ago - we don't have any food for them here at the moment. Its quite special watching their transformation from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. What kind of leaves was this one eating?
Makes for a strong colourful image over all. Very attractively composed. (I thought I had a great dolphin photo - until I realised that I had the tail end instead of the head!) I love those stripy bodies.
@chikadnz I know so little about beach plants. It was chewing on the leaves of the plant you see, which is about a foot tall and, from what I can tell, didn't have a flower with it.
Such beautiful creatures in all their stages
