Looking south on the night of the meteor shower, we could see Mars as clear as could be. It actually had a bit of a red glow to it in person.
Thank you for putting my meteor onto PP today! And so many lovely comments -- much appreciated.
I like your composition with environment to set off the stars. To me the stars are a bit soft. in my camera with 14mm lens the longest shutter speed that works is 15 secs so your shutter speed may have made the stras less sharp. Another possibility is that the focus was slightly off. Try zooming in on something bright...maybe Mars... on your LCD screen and perfect the focus from there.
@jgpittenger I think the softness was from two causes. First one is that the 25 seconds was too long, for sure. Next time I'm going to keep it 15 - 20 at the most. But I think from what a number of folks have said about Sunday night is there was a haze. Folks who live on the east side said that the few nights before, the Milky Way was crystal sharp and on Sunday night it was soft or fuzzy in comparison. Having never seen it on the island, I didn't have anything to compare -- just that I was disappointed in how it looked. Someone said they had read (so very third to fourth hand info) that even we are being affected by the extensive fires on the west coast, with a haze coming into the night sky. It's been flat and gray since Sunday. Thanks as always for the tips. BTW, you taught me that it is possible to catch a hummingbird peeing (you had posted one last year I think) - and that's how I recognized it!
@taffy it’s horrifying how much the fires are impacting the whole country.. so sorry you didn’t get to see the Milky Way in all its gorgeousness. Lol re the hummer pee
