Baroque on Beaver is an annual musical festival - https://www.baroqueonbeaver.org - that brings professional musicians to the island for a week of concerts and related festivities. The island's only professional photographer moved off-island this summer so I've been asked to take over that role. I agreed to do it as a volunteer, so we can both see whether it's a good idea (the festival board and me) before someone actually pays me (and thus creates pressure that I've tried to leave behind in retirement!). As most of you know, people are not my favorite subjects. But, it will be a great learning experience. Tonight was the kick-off with a presentation by the music director and conductor, Robert Nordling, caught here just before he started, sharing a moment with the immediate past board chair, Anne. More to come...
Thank you for all the wonderful comments about my insect posted yesterday -- quite appreciated!
Super! You did a lovely job, separating subjects from their background. A future event photog? ;) I have several white balance tricks to double-check your shot's WB, although this looks great. Happy to share at a later time for future shots.
@rosiekerr Thanks! I was pleased with this one, and thought about 8 were okay to document and capture this event. I had to adjust white balance to cooler. It was showing as quite warm with the church indoor lighting. Would love some WB tips if easy for you to do! And any others as event photo work is new to me. Venues vary from outdoor at the Whiskey Point Lighthouse to a small auditorium, one at the Community Center and the other at the research station. It's all quite an array of places and performers. I have to figure out first how to silence my shutter!!
Enjoy your new adventure as island photographer! I always have thought your photography was as good as any professional, although as you said, it wasn't people.
I am sure you will fulfil the roll perfectly as photographer. I love how this photo tells a story. Thanks for the link, it sounds like a really interesting event.
You've captured what seems to have been a very interesting exchange of ideas. I'm sure you will do a fabulous job - but retirement is very precious - no stress, no obligations. Volunteering is wonderful! :)
This is a wonderful candid capture Taffy - often much better than posed images! Knowing you they will be thrilled with the results of your efforts little knowing how much actual effort you have put in while you are learning this new skill. This to me sounds like wedding photography which I would never do professionally. Too much stress. For me it would be a step too far doing this event officially. You are going to have lots of people wanting copies of your great images and that can be so time consuming and stressful.
Then again if you are going to do this event again you may as well get paid! Lol! I’m not much help am I? Lol! Just enjoy the week which sounds wonderful!
well, lucky baroque on beaver is all i can say. you will do a marvellous job. i love the warm feeling you captured here, and the muted context that we are given in the background. i silenced my shutter for an event a while back and have left it thus ever since
Wow, congrats! Great way to test it out by doing it voluntarily first. This is a super capture of facial expressions. Wishing you all the best with the festival!
You are smart to just volunteer for a while. Your photos will be wonderful, it’s all the “after the photos” that takes your time. You will know soon enough if it’s for you. This is a wonderful photo.
This is terrific - they definitely are getting one of the best photographers around - now to see if you want that kind of pressure. No question that your photos of events will be outstanding - that's just what you do.
Oh I love people shots, my very favourite, how could you not love those lovely expressions, he has a lovely kind face. Hope all goes well & your volunteer photo project is a wild success & you do get money!!
Not that this particular photo needs it, but I am posting here for reference.
Once you get the WB the way you like it, you can flatten the image in PS and hit the "save" function under file. It should save it right back to LR (if you started there). Worth a try, anyway.
This is a role that you will fill just fine! You certainly have the talent and caliber of a professional photographer! This is a really nice candid- the interchange between the two people has been captured at just the right moment. Congrats on the new "role"! Great shot!
I'm going backwards and it looks like you are doing a great job. Most of my questions are answered as I back up. It can be so stressful but rewarding once it's over.
Well congratulations - and what a great start. I am quite sure that you will not be letting anyone down with your skills and they are extremely fortunate to have you as their photographer, let alone as a volunteer. Hope the whole event is not causing you too much pressure and that you find you can enjoy it - at least in part.

They couldn't have found a better photographer!
Enjoy your new position. :)
