In the midst of so much, so many people are hurting now. This 'tent city' is under the viaduct near one of the main commuter stations in Chicago. Day to day foot traffic, commuters, runners, coexist in this sheltered area. As temperatures drop, the lives of those whose only home is a tent just gets harder and harder.
A great capture of the sad times we are living in. There are so many here too. There are so many poor souls, many children begging at traffic lights. Hundreds of homeless living all over, they do not have tents but cardboard and plastic. Breaks ones heart to see them.
An excellent capture of a very sad situation. I read where there are some who refuse assistance - probably mental health issues I hope - but sure we are a country that could do better than this for those in need.
Your composition is exceptionally powerful, the individual turned and walking away from the the plight of those who have no option but to live in tents brings tears to my eyes. FAV!!!!
Oh this is so sad, great storytelling though. In Australia homeless people were placed into hotel and hostel accommodation and it is hoped that now restrictions have eased they can be found permanent sheltered housing instead of putting them back on the streets. I hope accommodation can be found for your homeless people too.
Your B&W picture documents so well this terrible situation. The strictly symmetrical metallic structure contrasts with the imperfect shape of the tents.
Yes, we haven't heard the end of the Corona Virus story. There will be repercussions for a long time after the vaccines are rolled out worldwide. Such a sad story for so many. A powerful image, Taffy.
Glad they at least have somewhere under a roof of some sorts out of the weather, but you wish people didn't have to live like this. I often wonder what their stories are......
It is just so sad to think of so many sleeping rough at this time of year while we are snuggled up in warm homes. I used to volunteer on Christmas Day to go and help the homeless have a nice dinner and I wanted my children to know how sad it is to see people struggling like this. I hope they learned a valuable lesson to help those less fortunate than ourselves
The world is full of folk with no home if their own. During Covid lots of cities in the Uk have been very actively rehoming as many as the rough sleepers as possible but I donât know if it will last...I canât imagine the misery of having to sleep rough. These tents might be in a dry place but it will be chilled & draughty under there....such difference in the haves & have nots!
They say anyone is only two pay checks away from homelessness!
This is a message to all of us who have a home and family to value them. In the UK many of the homeless were taken off the streets and housed in hotels during the worst of the pandemic but what happens to them once the hotels can reopen for business?
Sad situation, but you have captured it with a very touching photo. The contrast between the person casually jogging by and the tents is very striking, also the light and life going on beyond the viaduct. There is really a lot to this photo. Fav
Editing image underlines the topic.
There is a such scene in book of Carson McCullers (THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER). As she passes the homeless man lying on the bench, she wonders that he was also a long-awaited and beloved child. It stuck in my memory and I always think about it.
@ukandie1 Just north of OTC, I'm guessing Lake or a block north? Walking from home, I know I went north past Randolph and then east under the viaduct. First time I'd seen so many tents there -- heartbreaking for sure.
