Times are Hard by taffy

Times are Hard

In the midst of so much, so many people are hurting now. This 'tent city' is under the viaduct near one of the main commuter stations in Chicago. Day to day foot traffic, commuters, runners, coexist in this sheltered area. As temperatures drop, the lives of those whose only home is a tent just gets harder and harder.
Awesome capture. At least the viaduct does offer a little protection, but doesn't keep the cold away from them. That would be a tough way to live.

Sad statement of these times and great shot to tell the tale.

A great capture of the sad times we are living in. There are so many here too. There are so many poor souls, many children begging at traffic lights. Hundreds of homeless living all over, they do not have tents but cardboard and plastic. Breaks ones heart to see them.

An excellent capture of a very sad situation. I read where there are some who refuse assistance - probably mental health issues I hope - but sure we are a country that could do better than this for those in need.
December 13th, 2020
Good street shot. Cannot imagine living in those circumstances.
December 13th, 2020
Your composition is exceptionally powerful, the individual turned and walking away from the the plight of those who have no option but to live in tents brings tears to my eyes. FAV!!!!

Oh this is so sad, great storytelling though. In Australia homeless people were placed into hotel and hostel accommodation and it is hoped that now restrictions have eased they can be found permanent sheltered housing instead of putting them back on the streets. I hope accommodation can be found for your homeless people too.

We had some tent cities here . The city opened up the conference center to find them a space indoors

such a striking image
December 13th, 2020
Your B&W picture documents so well this terrible situation. The strictly symmetrical metallic structure contrasts with the imperfect shape of the tents.

Kat
Moving shot, love the b&w

Sad fact of life theses days

This photo tells a harsh story. Well captured.

Great capture but so sad.

Yes, we haven't heard the end of the Corona Virus story. There will be repercussions for a long time after the vaccines are rolled out worldwide. Such a sad story for so many. A powerful image, Taffy.
December 13th, 2020
A sad sight.

A tragic, poignant scene really well captured. Such a hard life for so many...

So many are hurting, so very sad. Wonderful image
December 13th, 2020
So heart-breaking !
December 13th, 2020
Glad they at least have somewhere under a roof of some sorts out of the weather, but you wish people didn't have to live like this. I often wonder what their stories are......
December 13th, 2020
Such a great storytelling image, Taffy. This scene is unfolding all across our land now.
December 13th, 2020
Thanks for the photojournalist shot - Chicago is a big city with a colorful history - hope things don't get out of hand here ...

It is just so sad to think of so many sleeping rough at this time of year while we are snuggled up in warm homes. I used to volunteer on Christmas Day to go and help the homeless have a nice dinner and I wanted my children to know how sad it is to see people struggling like this. I hope they learned a valuable lesson to help those less fortunate than ourselves
December 13th, 2020
A poignant reminder of the challenges so many (too many) face each day....well captured.
December 13th, 2020
That is so sad to see.
December 13th, 2020
The world is full of folk with no home if their own. During Covid lots of cities in the Uk have been very actively rehoming as many as the rough sleepers as possible but I don’t know if it will last...I can’t imagine the misery of having to sleep rough. These tents might be in a dry place but it will be chilled & draughty under there....such difference in the haves & have nots!
They say anyone is only two pay checks away from homelessness!
December 13th, 2020
It's tragic to see this, a great storytelling shot though.
December 13th, 2020
This is a message to all of us who have a home and family to value them. In the UK many of the homeless were taken off the streets and housed in hotels during the worst of the pandemic but what happens to them once the hotels can reopen for business?
December 13th, 2020
Wow! This is hard to see...
December 13th, 2020
So sad but a reality most people don't even see
December 13th, 2020
To see this happening around the world is heart broken and depressing.
December 13th, 2020
Such a sad capture, makes you count your blessings
December 13th, 2020
A poignant capture, makes one stop and think, especially at this time of year
December 13th, 2020
I feel desperately sorry for anyone who lives rough...
December 13th, 2020
So sad
December 13th, 2020
Sad situation, but you have captured it with a very touching photo. The contrast between the person casually jogging by and the tents is very striking, also the light and life going on beyond the viaduct. There is really a lot to this photo. Fav
December 14th, 2020
I would not want to live that way. I guess it's good they are allowed to pitch them underneath the building for a bit more shelter.
December 14th, 2020
Oh ouch. So poignant and your composition and processing underlines that
December 14th, 2020
Good news photo
December 14th, 2020
Such a sad sad way to have to live
December 14th, 2020
Editing image underlines the topic.
There is a such scene in book of Carson McCullers (THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER). As she passes the homeless man lying on the bench, she wonders that he was also a long-awaited and beloved child. It stuck in my memory and I always think about it.

Tom
The composition and the gray tone is perfect for the subject
and the feeling of the time, place and people
December 14th, 2020
sad point but nicely documented - like your choice to go b/w
December 17th, 2020
This is shame for our world
December 20th, 2020
Oh wow where is this? Last week we saw a line about 20 long lined up outside of a local goodwill store, made my heart weep!
December 21st, 2020
@ukandie1 Just north of OTC, I'm guessing Lake or a block north? Walking from home, I know I went north past Randolph and then east under the viaduct. First time I'd seen so many tents there -- heartbreaking for sure.
