This is a broad billed hummingbird, which is apparently not usually found this far north. It's big news among the birding community. Imagine getting up at the wee hours of the morning and driving however long it takes to get to a particular tree in a field by 7:30 in the hope that this bird shows up for a quick few minutes of feeding, only to leave again and maybe return hours later for another quick feed. Truly absurd...but there I was doing exactly that with @jyokota and @PattyP this morning. And we were fortunate enough to see him arrive on schedule more or less.
Gorgeous! I'd never heard of this variety of hummingbird before.
Very cool! We have a mated pair of Ruby-Throated hummingbirds that visit our feeder, but I never seem to be able to catch a shot of them. Hopefully this spring!
