Serenity at Mile 8.4, Redux by taffy

Serenity at Mile 8.4, Redux

Jane Pittenger suggested a crop with a clearer sense of where the viewer's eye should land. I thought her advice was on target.
Jane, what do you think?

@jgpittenger -- What do you think? I thought you had a good point, and tried to use the rocks and the log to point to the key elements which hopefully are in balance.

I prefer this one with less to look at and more to look at at the same time.

I am not sure, I liked the foliage on the other one. Still an amazing capture.

I do think the subject is more defined, but for some reason I like the original. I'm not sure why, but I think it does have something to do with the yellow leaves and the light coming in from above.

I think I've gone back and forth a dozen times - guess my choice would be this one with the closer crop to those fascinating roots - both have their medit - nice spot

I'm torn too ... but on reflection, lots of it, I think I like the first one best. This one is super though.

Great capture. I do like the closer crop I think

Both have their merits ,, but my preference would be the original one

I prefer the original, as it more to see. All I see in the one is the massive roots, which is not inviting to me to go any further.

Nicely edited

Great pov, compostiion

In my humble opinion, the tree is too strongly centered in this, maybe a crop where the tree is along the edge of the frame.

Both are super nice but I kind of like the additional park of the rock wall in the original.

This one focuses more on the mass of roots but I prefer the original.

you really got me thinking on this one - to the extent that I saved your image and played with the crop. I think you need to take away the stones in the foreground that are creating a leading line out to the left of the picture - I kept just two of them. I also kept all of the top of the original picture with the wonderful foliage. The tree roots can sit to the right of the image and help to frame the waterfall. Once the line of stones are gone, the log acts as a lead in to the waterfall and it becomes a much more comfortable picture to view - that is what I found anyway. It is full of wonderful detail and colour.

Wonderful shot

@helenhall Thank you for such a detailed and thoughtful response! I can see what you mean in your suggestions -- haven't tried them yet, but they make total sense.

What a great shot of the wonder of nature, showing the roots of that tree, using up as much ground as possible to keep it going.

Interesting. I loved the foliage around the falls and it seems to frame the falls nicely. I would crop left to edge of roots and get rid of all those stones. I think Helen Jane is right re the rocks. Maybe crop bottom as feels right and clone all the rocks but the two on right that lead into the waterfall. I’d play with it but my computer is off for the night

In the first image the waterfall is what the eye is drawn to, in the second it is the mass of roots. My preference is the first. But if you did want to show of the roots, I think you need to take more detail out of the photo. Either way a great pic.

This is a tough one. Sort of like the cropped version, but also like the more open one also.
