I went with @jyokota and her husband (my colleague) Bill to see the Puerto Rican Quatro Concert (along with a 'warm-up' by members of the Puerto Rico National Symphony) on campus. It was the perfect opportunity to work on my Get-Pushed challenge from @so_lo_webb to "take an environmental portrait." In this one, I tried to capture what musicians do far more than performing -- practice. Before the concert I was able to walk around in the area where the performers were rehearsing/practicing for the upcoming concert. I liked the 'parallel' play that was visible in this image -- each working solo to prepare. The cacophony of sound was quite striking if you can imagine it.
An alternate get pushed image is in my extras album. http://365project.org/taffy/the-also-ran-ph/2013-11-07
@so_lo_webb Attempt #2. The musicians were so cooperative during practice, letting me photograph them as they played or worked with their music and instruments. Thanks for the challenge -- as you could tell, I rarely take photos of people and almost never of strangers! It was a good experience to have to step out of my comfort zone (and take advantage of a rarely used primary lens!)
I do like this portrait a lot! The trumpet player is central; yet the blurred but distinct inclusion of the clarinet player and the cellist is an important aspect of this portrait. Your narrative describes the situation perfectly!
