Great flight to Maui on a clear day (photos to come later). After stopping for a quick lunch, we got to Kaanapali'i where we will stay til Christmas day. While Jim made sure the TV worked so he could get the Bears game (which we badly lost so he should have come with me!), I scouted out snorkeling in the area and went to Black Rock. Underwater shots were not great -- cloudy water unfortunately, But when I popped up to clear my mask and looked to see how far out I'd gone, this is what greeted me!! There was actually a double but the other was fairly faded compared to this one, which looked like it was shot out of the cloud.
In my other albums, sunrise on Oahu - http://365project.org/taffy/the-also-ran-ph/2013-12-22 - and sunset on Maui http://365project.org/taffy/365/2013-12-22.
I feel so lucky to be ending the year with these photo opportunities!
You have been catching some amazing rainbows on your trip!! What a view.....such a treat!! So glad you are enjoying your vacation....soak it all up..... Chicago will be cold when you get back! Or, you could come visit us in California....it's much closer! :-)
Another stunning rainbow! Such vibrant colors. Magical. There's something about the clarity of the skies and the gentle trade winds
in the islands -- it's a unique experience. So glad you're having such a wonderful time and good weather. Loving your photos.
@kwind I'm glad to hear there is a possibility of turtles on this side. The wave action was so strong that it was very grainy. How far did you go out to see the turtles? Beyond the rock?
@taffy We were just at the far end of the rock. There were people diving off it. There was a guy who had fish food so I stayed around him and his kid and got lots of shots. The turtles were out a little deeper, more at the point (if that makes sense).
@taffy We always do the beach in the am. I'm not a fan of the sun so we go from 8-12 and then go explore during the hottest part of the day. Have you been to the Iao Needle yet?? Very pretty and easy to find. We did the road to Hana and went all the way around. Crazy roads on the back side but amazing scenery. There's a black sand beach just as you enter Hana that's worth checking out.
@kwind We won't have time to do the Hana road -- we went up to the mountain today but it was mostly socked in. Beautiful on the way up, then scary for a bit, up and back. Tomorrow is whale watching in the a.m. but i may try to get back to Black Rock Wed a.m. before we leave. thanks for the advice!
