I'm catching up on posting some photos from my recent trip to the California coast. I'm wondering if anyone knows what caused this circle around the sun to appear (this is pretty much SOOC). Is it a camera contributed function? Or is it a natural phenomenon? None of my other shots had this and I vaguely remember someone posting a photo with this ring last year sometime.
@vskolnik Do you know what in the lens might have caused it? I wasn't really looking at it via naked eye but am assuming since it didn't show up in other shots, it is camera related. But, this was the only shot I took from this angle (I was walking along the beach and snapping, rather than setting up with tripod). I was wondering if it happened because I'd centered the sun in the shot, where in all the others, I'd had it off center (top or bottom third)
@olivetreeann It's very pretty! The circle is so perfect it can only be a "hot spot," internal light reflection off the inside surface of the lens barrel. They usually don't show up as strongly as this with visible light, the lenses are usually treated to prevent severe manifestations of the effect. They usually show up at only at particular focal lengths on a zoom, and then most strongly at smaller apertures. It's a significant problem with many lenses shooting near-infrared since lenses are not designed to optimize for the longer wavelengths.
@frankhymus Thanks Frank! I'm sure Taffy will enjoy learning what caused this. I had a feeling it had something to do with the lens but wasn't quite sure how.
It's still a pretty shot!
