This is on the Hunting's acreage on Sloptown Road (named because of the pig farms that used to line the road, but no longer). Al Hunting is a 'gentleman farmer' whose day job is 'downstate' (Michigan's vernacular is 'up north' and 'downstate' but I don't actually know what the dividing line would be). He and his wife have restored an old farmstead, and repaired this dwelling (at least the exterior). Beaver Island was initially settled by Native Americans, followed by the Mormons led by the self-declared King Strang, and eventually the Irish. The Irish and Mormon battled in the late 1800s, with the Irish prevailing. The bar on the main strip in town is the Shamrock, and the island is dotted with old Mormon dwellings, now mostly in ruins.
Another island scene is in my main album: http://365project.org/taffy/365/2013-05-28
This is a wonderful capture of history and I love the scene and structure. Perfect lighting and processing give it a very vintage look. FAV. Also love the commentary you are providing!
@steff I smiled at your comment! It is great here most of the time. Today we are on our second day of being fogged in, so I wonder what the folks who can't get off the island think. And we have a bunch of stuff waiting at the Charlevoix airport that they can't ship over! Thank goodness I had a little tea left over from last year or I'd be in poor shape!
Thank you all! This was a very run down example until the past year or two. I'm really curious about what they did with the interior -- if anything, or if it just something to make their acreage look more interesting. Whichever, it's very cool to see one of these restored back to what they must have looked like in the 1800s.
