Every August Beaver Island has Homecoming. This annual weekend sees the island population swell with family reunions and special events each day. Over the weekend is the Bud McDonough Memorial Softball Tournament. This year, for the first time ever, a team from the Central Michigan University Biological Station was invited to participate. The scientist/manager of the station is married to my friend, Vickey, of snake hunting fame, and he asked if I'd photograph his team. It was GREAT fun -- I'd never done action photography like this. He asked me to create a team photo, and get shots of everyone batting and playing their field positions. They'd beat the McDonough team in overtime the night before so were in high spirits. Unfortunately, this game wasn't even close and they weren't on the right end of the score. But everyone seemed to have a great time and I had a blast being ON THE FIELD (!!!) shooting away! This shot was of a close play at 3rd base, almost right in front of me. I think I caught everyone hitting, running, and in some cases, catching (and unfortunately, in several cases missing) fielded balls.
Posted because it was Jim's favorite.

Thanks so much for you positive comments on my action shot. I have such appreciation for photographers that choose to do this all the time. It's so hard to react quickly enough to catch the key plays in the field. Much more possible to capture a pitch or the hit because you know where it is going to happen!
Thank you all so much! It was so much fun to try to capture action -- glad you liked this example. And Annie - thanks for the fav!
