Met Expectations

Having cravings is a very dangerous thing in Taiwan. If it's for Western food, most likely the place you go to have that food will not be so authentic, thus leaving you wanting. Or if it's a Taiwanese specialty, you may go to find that store has closed as it was just a little too special to have legs.

For a few weeks I was craving a burrito for this one mexican place. I ended up not going until my several week craving was gone, as I didn't want to be disappointed. I finally went on Saturday, and man was it wonderful. It was even better than I expected. I don't think I've gotten a smile like that from something I've eaten in a long time. It was just so good!

My history with mexican food in Taiwan is a unique one. For years I felt the best tasting (but not nearly authentic) mexican food was from a small stand in a night market. I have a bad history of vendors who sell unique foods that i like, disappearing cause people are too scared to give it a shot. So for many months I told anybody who would listen to go there and try it out. This ended up with him becoming too busy, and me not wanting to wait in a 2 hour line for his food.

A former coworker of mine opened up a mexican place, but the food just wasn't right. And i went to a very expensive mexican place which tried to really over think things trying to make amazing unique creations which didn't need to be made. Eventually I found a taiwaense run mexican place which wasn't the best of quality, but good enough. However after a spot on a tv show, it became a trendy place to be. It trended itself right out of my life.

Next there was a more "authenic" place where they build your burrito for you from a variety of ingredients you can choose from, but as promising as it seemed, the taste left a lot to be desired. So i was skeptical when another place like that opened up a few months later, but thankfully that place was pretty good.

That place is the one you see above. It's not all great though, as other than their burritos, the rest of their dishes aren't that great. And there was a small time period where for some reason their burritos were lacking. I'm glad to see their back in form, I hope the next time I write about them, it will be saying how they have kept up the quality, and maybe kindly lowered the price, it is a bit absurdly priced for a burrito. Seven bucks for a burrito? Yes this is taiwan so it could be considered a specialty food, but still.
