The "betel nut" discussed yesterday is sold in very specific betel nut establishments. these are tiny roadside stores that are inhabited by "spicy girls" (they taiwanese word for ladies who wear a lot of makeup and dress in very revealing attire).
These girls' job is to cut the betel nut and to take them out to the car of the customers. At this point the customer usually gives the girl the money and touches their boobs while doing this. Granted this part has been frowned on for the last decade and the government is trying to stop this part of the interaction.
I have always wondered why women would choose to have this job, and more than once have wanted to stop in and ask them. Recently I was given the answer by a friend whose friend works as a betel nut girl. Essentially it has to do the with the horrible education system which at a young age can set children up to fail. Because you must get into a good high school to go to a good university to get a good job, if you don't get into a good high school, your future is pretty bleak. So young girls in this situation are happy to take a job that pays well and is little effort.
Of course the problem is that after a few years when they are not longer attractive enough they are out on the street with no job, no education, and no prospects. But in all honesty this is no different if they went to a terrible high school. At least this way they would have a few years of having made some good money, which is much more than most people who don't get into the best schools could ever hope for.
As for the picture, yeah it's terrible. I've been trying for years to get a good picture but without seeming like a pervert. Also these women are valued only for their appearance so i didn't want to be yet another person who appeared to be doing the same thing. So the best you get is this picture of one lady's back while she couldn't see me. Which now that I think about it seems even more perverted.
