Oh How We Adjust

If you go out to eat and there is a hair in your food, you will complain and you will get an apology and a free meal. Well if you come to Taiwan you will quickly have to get used to the taste of hair, cause it's in everything. I remember my first meal here had a hair in it and i was shocked and repulsed, but all the other people I was eating with looked at it, shrugged, and went back to eating their meal. This is when I learned that in Taiwan a hair in your food is just part of life and you better quickly adjust or you'll starve.

It is interesting how most restaurant workers will wear one of those surgical masks to cover their mouths, however i don't think i've yet to see anybody wear a hair net. Moreover it's extremely common to people touch/handle your food without wearing those clear plastic gloves. Hope you like fingernail juice in your food!

As for the picture, it's a pretty clear example of how much I've changed. It's so common that there are hairs in my food, that I never even thought to take a picture of it. Or perhaps I'm just too embarrassed to put up a picture of a meal with a hair in it, knowing that I just ended up eating around it. So rather than show my shame, you have a picture dealing with somebody who has no shame, my dog. It's a horrible picture so you can't really tell, but usually some of her hair will fall into her water bowl, and on lucky days a bug or two. Yum, protein!
