It's All About Branding

In Taiwan there seems to be this unfortunate opinion that if something is from the west than it is inherently better. I will admit that Taiwanese brands don't have the same commitment to quality as many foreign companies do, but sometimes this can be advantageous.

Anyway, when it comes to certain things, the thought that it's from the west can sometimes give it a leg up on the competition. This often leads to companies trying to make it appear that they are from the west even if they are a taiwanese business. A great example is the "Texas Rangers" fast food chicken restaurant. It looks not so good, and i've been told it doesn't taste so good, but often times I will hear people in front of the store actually say "well let's try it out, it's from america so it must be good." Hmm, seems like I should sue them cause they are ruining the american "brand." if people think this is american and the quality is bad, than they could associate my quality as also bad. Time to give the lawyer a call.

A separate thing I'd like to touch on from this picture is the times. If you notice the cost at lunch is a little higher than the cost during the afternoon dead hours. granted the things you get for the money are a bit different. This reminds me of of another common practice around the city, especially in the more commercial areas of the city that have many office buildings. The restaurants in those areas will charge more for lunch, and charge less for dinner.

This can be a little shifty, but it's not so bad if you are smart about it. It has allowed me to eat at some pretty high quality places for a much cheaper price, just cause i went there for dinner instead of lunch. Even in my own neighborhood there are a few restaurants i know that i shouldn't go to for lunch because they charge a bit more then.

Ironically, true western restaurants don't do this. Like the west, lunch is cheaper than dinner, or rather there are lunch specials/deals where you get more for your money. So I guess a good way to know what country your restaurant is really from and/or who runs it, is by comparing the prices between lunch and dinner.
