Beardy Guy by taiwandaily

Beardy Guy

Pictured above is the logo for a restaurant that I refer to as "beardy guy" because it was easier than remembering the chinese name. In fact most of the places I frequent are just referred to as "_____ guy/lady"

Beardy guy is quite famous for it's meat rice. Basically just a bowl of rice with your choice of ground meat on top. Sounds boring, and yes the flavor is not something to write home about, but I must admit sometimes a bowl of rice with chicken on it can hit the spot.

Another thing that sets him apart is that his lunch boxes are quite large and on top of your main meat, you usually get two or more meat side dishes as well. Unhealthy for sure, but for many foreign teachers he is a godsend because he is open late. Because of the class schedule, many teachers have their "dinner" after 10pm.

He has also become known because of something completely different. He was a t-shirt superstar. You couldn't walk anywhere without seeing his face on t-shirts. He was put on a start up taiwanese t-shirt company called Pizza Cut Five. Named so because they sell their t-shirts folded up in pizza boxes.

They are an interesting story in that they made a lot of low quality t-shirts with famous logos on them (copyright infringement really isn't a thing in Taiwan). Eventually they got so popular that they went legit and have branched out into other forms of men's and ladies' fashions and accessories.

America is full of brands that had this same story, but when they expanded they lost their street cred and their business faltered. Thankfully in Taiwan street cred doesn't exist, so they are free to sellout as much as they'd like. I wonder how much longer until there is an actual Pizza Cut Five pizza restaurant.
