It's Fun To Stay At The...

With the new year soon coming I figured I'd share a staple of new year's here....statues. In America for the holidays we have floats for parades, in Taiwan they have statues which stay in one place and you go to visit them.

Normally during the New Year's and the Lantern Festival, you can go to Sun Yet-Sen memorial hall, and see a lot of statues made by different groups for bringing in the new year. After those holidays they take the statues away and instead of destroying them, they put them in various part of the city. Kind of cheap art for the city. I like that they keep them around for a year, but most of them don't fit with the decor of the area they are put up in. A bright colorful rockstar elf put in a business center, comes to mind.

These are in front of the YMCA, yes there is one in Taiwan. There are many sports centers around the city which have many badminton courts, a basketball court, a climbing wall, swimming pool, gym, and indoor track. However the YMCA is geared a lot more towards kids, so it has a library, a computer center, and other activities geared toward kids.

Which makes me think that these sculptures could have nothing to do with the new year's festivities are all and are just ones that the kids made in a program at the Y. But if I had to guess I think they would be ones at the festival that they made and just took them back afterwards.

And what do large robots have to do with the new year celebration? Well what do most of the floats in the thanksgiving parade have to do with thanksgiving? Granted most of the things at the festivities are based on the animal it is the year of. Not sure when they are going to update the calender to include the year of the mech.
