Leslie Knope

I got so angry last night that I actually couldn't sleep for awhile. The reason I was so upset is because for the past few months I really wanted some waffles, and last night it came to a head. I got upset because I pretty much knew there is no place in Taiwan to get authentic waffles.

I said "authentic" because waffles are actually quite popular in Taiwan. There are boatloads of waffle cafes which serve waffles with a decoration of ice cream, whipped cream, and fruits piled absurdly high on top. The problem is that their waffles aren't waffles. They are some disgusting batter put in a waffle maker and cooked incorrectly. It's hard to explain so perhaps a good analogy would be to say it's like if you ordered french toast and they just gave you a slice of bread.

Because those "waffles" are so popular (or rather the beautiful arrangement of toppings on top of them) there are no authentic waffles in the city. But last night I was on a quest to find some anyway, and spent half the night online reading reviews (in Chinese and English), looking at pictures, trying to find a place that has real waffles. After being up half the night I was confident that I had discovered two places that might actually have real waffles.

As you can see in the picture today I went to a place that had real waffles. While not amazing, they were the real thing. I was actually hesitant about going here as it's a restaurant that I don't' particularly care for. It's a western restaurant in a part of the city where many of the "bad" foreigners hang out. As much as it pains me to say it, most foreigners who come here are recent graduates who just want to come over for a year abroad to party every night and have fun and not respect their job or their students. This restaurant is usually filled with those type of foreigners so I generally stay away. That and their food usually isn't very good.

Thankfully there weren't many foreigners there today, and the waffles were good enough to satisfy my craving. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows though. My friend had an omelet, that was horrible. It was quite cheesy, which i commend because 90% of omelets aren't cheesy enough. However the cheese used tasted like it was processed sliced cheese that you use for your sandwiches when you are a kid. Ugh, I gotta go lay down, the memory of that omelet is making my stomach queasy.
Yummy!
