10,000 Layers Of Joy

I'm not a fan of noodles, in Taiwan at least. This is because when you order something like "beef noodles" your meal is 95% noodles and 5% beef. and since noodles don't taste like anything, you are basically getting a bland and super unhealthy meal.

The one noodle I do like is lasagna. Granted lasagna is basically just pizza but without the crust, but it still counts as noodles...barely. In Tawian quite a few cafes have lasagna, but they all are the same. I truly believe every taiwanese owned place that has lasagna is just ordering it precooked from the same place. And of course, it's quite bad (i think it's like 80% mushrooms).

The one place that has tasty lasagna is Swensen's. This is an american chain restaurant that is popular for it's ice cream. In fact every thing they sell is terrible, except for their ice cream. The lasagna seems to be the one exception to this, and while it's not great by any standard, it is quite serviceable.

Swensen's is also the only place to go for a good milkshake. Of course other places have milkshakes but they all use Taiwanese brand ice cream, which is not made from milk, and not sweet. Meaning if i'm feeling rich, i'll sometimes go to Swensen's for some lasagna and a milkshake.

The name of lasagna in Chinese is, "10,000 layer noodle." not surprisingly, most Taiwanese have never had it (or they suffered the kind sold in cafes), so whenever they have the one at Swensen's, it's great to see the look in their eyes after they take their first bite. An expression of pure joy.
