I have heard it said that Taiwan has more universities per person than any other country in the rest of the world. While this may or may not be true, the fact that it's even said, illustrates just how many universities there are.
With space being at a premium in Taiwan, most universities have to figure out how to put a lot of buildings and facilities in as small an area as possible. I actually enjoy walking through Taipei universities to see just how they designed their "campus."
The one above is a pretty one right in the center of the city. It's about the size of one city block, but they do a lot with their design to make it feel like you are not in the city. this is mainly accomplished with lots of trees, ivy covered buildings, and stone block lanes.
A few months ago while cutting through the school, I saw that they had put this modern looking fountain in the middle of one of their quaint lanes. It is quite the eye sore, and of course it seems like a waste of money that could have been put towards education. But the main reason I put this picture up is because just a few days ago I walked by and the fountain is gone.
