Ducky Lady

For the past few days I was in the midst of a deep food depression. This happens occasionally when foreigners get fed up with food choices basically being only a choice between five different styles of food. To combat this, most people have some special places around town which sell some unique (i.e. expensive) dishes to help bring out of your funk. However I had even grown tired of these special backup places.

Thankfully I was recently able to break out of my food depression by doing the opposite thing. I tried some new food places in my area and they were pretty darn horrible. So tasting how horrible food could me, made me grateful for the places I do like in my area.

As for today's picture. Well I mention a day or two ago that when it comes to finding a place I like, i either have two options. It closes cause it has no customers, or it becomes super popular and too busy for me to eat there. Unfortunately the later has happened to me more than once, and it's all the fault of the lady in the picture.

Essentially I got tired of the new places I find being tasty, but me being the only customer and the place having to end up closing. So for awhile I would tell anybody and everybody about the places I liked and ask that they go give it a try. My knowing and absurdly large amount of people, and Taiwan being relatively small, word spread very quickly. It wasn't long until Ducky Lady showed up.

Ducky Lady is the what I call the lady in the picture since i don't know her name and she looks like a duck. As a foreigner, if you can't speak the language, you quickly come up with your own names for every place and person as a way of remembering them and communicating them with others. Ducky Lady was the host of a TV show which went around Taiwan trying different restaurants and food stands and reporting on them. There was about a three month period where I thought she was stalking me, as every restaurant or food place I liked, she would show up there with her film crew. It got the point where if I was eating a meal I'd be more shocked if her tv show didn't show up, than if they did.

The problem is that the TV show was just too influential so as soon as a spot is on the show, it would be swarmed with customers. Meaning the places I used to have a nice quiet meal at and never have to wait in line, would now have a two hour wait to get food. Essentially making it so I would never eat there again.

But never fear, I eventually got the better of her. Now I just eat at places so terrible, that she can never go there and ruin them for me. Oh, wait. It seems like she won, and not me.
