Bad Smells Now In Season

No this is not a reference to the fact that deodorant is not a part of Taiwanese culture. Rather it is a comment on the joy that it is now durian season.

This fruit was once unknown in the west, but it seems like as of a few years ago, everybody knew about it, as shows would comment on how pungent it's odor is.

My first encounter with this magical fruit was back in college when my roommate and I saw it on a travel show and wanted to try it for ourselves. An Asian-American friend mentioned that she knew where to get it, so we got one and brought it home to try.

As you can kind of see from the picture, it has a prickly outside, but inside it's kind of soft and creamy. It smells bad and tastes even worse. In fact it smelled so bad that we had to store it out on the balcony so the smell wouldn't contaminate the apartment.

Getting back to Taiwan, the picture above is in the local supermarket. They don't smell until they are opened, but unfortunately some have already split open. I don't actually know many people around my age or younger who like durian. And needless to say durian has a lifetime ban from wherever I live.
