The local aboriginal people called this part of the Cooper Yulkuparlu which means Rivergum. River Red Gums can live for 500-1000 years and are able to survive floods, bushfires and droughts.
Yulkuparlu provided many generations of aboriginal people with food, medicine and materials for shelter.
