I have never been able to get the hang of this type of shot. Any tips?

They look to have been very well built buildings. I like the way you have the lovely rich stonework both sides of this shot.

What are you trying to achieve Terry ? Depends on what you want to be the main subject of your photo.To me the buildings in the distance are the main point of interest and the post office window detracts from that.Only my opinion but i would have less of the window in the photo and the main focus on the building.

We follow the lead of professional photographers of ruins here in the Southwest, and this is exactly what they do. It provides a sense that there are several buildings there, not just the one ruin, and it also provides a natural frame to your main subject. You've actually nailed it, despite your expressed uncertainty.

I agree with Jane. Also the frame gives us extra information about the stone walls. Lovely shot.
