Wabma Kadarbu Mound Springs by terryliv

Wabma Kadarbu Mound Springs

Just off the Oodnadatta Track south of William Creek were one of the many surprises of the tour, the Wabma Kadarbu Mound Springs.
I have always associated springs with low lying areas but here, springs emanating from Australia's Great Artesian Basin, have created mounds several metres high.

Over millions of years, the springs have brought up sediment which has gradually created a mound rising above the surrounding salt flats and from which the spring water flows and then freely runs down the side of the mound. While the water is fresh, it is quite hot.

This is the stream flowing down from the Bubbler. The springs support their own micro eco system of plants and animals

Interesting to see a spring in this barren, dry landscape.

That is so interesting. I would have thought it would have been much greener with bigger plants.

The water doesn't seem to spread very far as it looks very dry and barren.
