The old Royal Alexandra's Children's Hospital, at the top of Clifton Hill, opened in 1881 and overlooked much of the town. "The Alex", as it was affectionately called by patients, staff and town residents, closed its doors in 2007 and a new state-of-the-art Children's Hospital was opened within the grounds of the town's main hospital.
The old site was sold to property developers who planned to demolish the entire hospital to build luxury flats but planning permission was refused until an agreement was reached that the main building would be retained as part of any future redevelopment.
Now renamed the Royal Alexandra Quarter, old and new sit side by side.
