It is the 127th year of the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. It commemorates the Emancipation Run in 1896, celebrating the Locomotives on the Highway Act which raised the speed limit from 4mph to 14mph and abolished the requirement for vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot waving a red flag.
It is open to pre-1905 vehicles which leave Hyde Park in London at 7am and have to reach Madeira Drive on Brighton seafront by 4.30pm (approx 60 miles). There are usually wayside crowds along the entire route.
This year, of the 341 motor vehicles which left Hyde Park, 301 reached Brighton, along with 27 antique motorcycles and cyclists, to give 328 finishers in total. Many of the riders and passengers can be seen sporting period costumes.
