Gas lamp B&W by 4rky

Gas lamp B&W

Gas lamps first appeared in Oxford streets in 1819; lamplighters had to tour the city to light the lamps at sunset and extinguish them at sunrise.

The 2,000 gas lamps that illuminated the city streets at night were finally replaced by electric lights in the 1970s but were designed to look like the old gas lamps so as not to look out of place in historic Oxford.
Great shot!

Beautiful shot of this great architecture.

each version has its merits - the reflection is zingier in colour - and I like the chimney stripes - but the detail on the column supports seems clearer in black and white

I like the B&W version better. There is less distraction from the architecture.

Can't choose possibly this has the edge.

Great b&w shot. Nice details.

These were both such nice images - but I really like it in b&w. The water stains and blue reflections seemed to be too distracting in the coloured version. :)

I like B&W..interesting information. A town near me, Malvern, still has about 100 working gas lamps!

@rosie00 Apparently there are still quite a few in London, too :)
