Flashback Friday #1 - Stonehenge by ajisaac

Flashback Friday #1 - Stonehenge

As a relatively newcomer to the 365 Project (started mid December 2015) I have taken one or two photos that may be worth a little look (but I'll let you be the judge of that) before I started posting on 365.

So over the next few weeks I am going to do a Flashback Friday with some of these shots!
I hope you will enjoy them.

Flashback Friday #1 - Kicking off with my take on one of the most photograph places in the world - Stonehenge.

It is about 40 minutes from where I live but it takes another 15 minutes to get from the new visitor centre to the stones now.Years ago there were no fences etc. we just walked across the grass & went up to the stones!

Much has been written about the purpose of the Henge, how the stones got there and there is still so much speculation, however, one of the most interesting (and to me plausible explanations) of how the stones traveled there is contained in the writings & research of a Robert John Langdon in his book 'The Stonehenge Enigma'

His theory of how the stones came by sea into a harbour at Stonehenge is fascinating, as he has concluded that the water levels where considerably higher due to the melting ice caps etc.

More information is contained on his website

I always love photos that have some history attached..keep them coming.!

A beautiful atmospheric sky and capture. I'm going to visit Avebury next weekend which they say is even better than Stonehenge.

Beautiful shot....can see why it's one of your fav's. I remember when I visited Stonehenge back in the mid 80's, we could not get right in amongst the stones...for some reason they were roped off, which was a bit disappointing, but I guess they need to do that to help preserve them. You are lucky to live so close to such a historic monument :)

@busylady Thank you. Avebury is a great place too. It covers a larger area as the stones are spread further out - I hope that you have a wonderful visit.

@777margo Thank you very much.

@leggzy Thank you for kind words. Yes in the 80's there was a lot of trouble with 'travelers' and the police so it was roped off more for protection.

We were fortunate to visit in the 80's and be able to walk around and touch the standing stones, was a magic experience. I can see why this is a favourite image of yours, it is great.
