I didn't go to Stonehenge or Avebury for the Winter Solstice, I believe a few thousand gathered there, so it's a bit crowded for me.
Not far away from Avebury is Silbury Hill, and here is a shot I took earlier this year.
Silbury Hill is the largest man-made mound in Europe and compares in height and volume to the roughly contemporary Egyptian pyramids. Probably completed in around 2400 BC, it apparently contains no burial. Though clearly important in itself, its purpose and significance remain unknown.
