This is St. John's Episcopal church on Church Hill in Richmond, scene of Patrick Henry's immortal words: Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!
It seemed appropriate to take this picture on Memorial Day.
What a great photo. I love that you captured the view of steeple, and not the entire church, from the perspective of looking up toward the garden wall.
I didn't know (or remember) that Patrick Henry said these words in Richmond. I have always loved early American history and am amazed at the courage of men like Patrick Henry.

What a wonderful way to memorialize Memorial Day! I guess St John is a favorite amongst Episcopal churches...we've got ours, too, just down the street. Love the way you framed the steeple in your picture, and find your caption so touching...
