Richmond was spared the damage that Hurricane Sandy inflicted on Virginia coastal communities and other states further north. The area was fortunate to get through the storm with no trees downed, no street flooding and no power outages.Although public schools had the day off, most private (or as we like to call them, "independent") schools returned to class at 10 A.M. The rain stopped by lunchtime, and at dismissal I was doing my usual Tuesday duty of escorting faculty and neighborhood children across campus to meet their parents. I stopped along the way to capture the patterns left by the rain on the sidewalk and was struck by the way the shapes on the dry cement mirrored the fallen leaves.
