Female Red-winged Blackbird

Florida. I'd love to crop that stick out, but I lose too much resolution when I do..
What a beautiful bird. It is such a great capture, I agree it would be nice to get rid of the stick - not with cropping. but with the clone brush tool. Which post processing software do you use? I use it a lot with wildflowers in the bush and when s stick obscures part of a fungus.

^^^ Agree. You could do that in post processing. I've just recently learned how to do it in Gimp which is free. That would be easy to do actually.

@ethelperry @not_left_handed I've never done any post-processing, unless using the Microsoft photo editor to crop, lighten, rotate, or increase contrast counts. I suppose I should take the leap, although my files are not in raw (not really even sure what that means, but it appears to make a difference in some programs.) Ethel, what program would you recommend? And Dawn, where can I get Gimp?

Just Google it and the site should come up. You have to download it to your computer. It will look intimidating especially since you don't post process, but if you don't mind learning, Google has a lot of helpful videos. I'm self teaching and doing a little bit more and more each time. That's one of the things I love - removing unwanted objects. I had a great nature picture that I took in a park, but there was a garbage can in the shot - I took it out.

this sure is one species where the females look totally diffenrent than the males. Great shot. Great choice for depth of field. FYI - I am a total techy nerd and have taken courses and used lots of photo editing software so feel free to message me or email me anytime if you have any questions.

@allred3 Thanks, and I will do so.

I don't have GIMP but and heartened that @not_left_handed is using it. Have a go and just try one thing you want to do. Rome wasn't built in a day. You are already doing the basic things I look at first in Photoshop. That is adjust the light/darkness then contrast and rotate may be the one where you can straighten horizons...then crop if you wish. And so it goes on.
Taking that stick out would be done with a brush sampling pixels at a point of your choice. I do it just a little at a time. Sample - brush, sample - brush, over and over until I am happy. Control z,(cmd Mac) undoes any Painting with your clone tool if you don't like it.
