Today I picked up some $1 sweaters at the Salvation Army just to harvest the buttons off them to use making mittens. It's cheaper than buying new buttons, and I don't think anyone else was going to buy those sweaters, even for $1. I look esp. for sweaters that are stained, ripped, shrunk etc. so I don't feel so guilty for throwing them away afterwards.
