Weeds are very good at springing fully grown from nowhere.
This looks like some kind of hawkweed?

@meotzi yes, I think it's a hawkweed - I have an orange one too (which is rather prettier)

These do exceedingly well in what passes for my lawn, in fact at the moment they are the only green bits as the grass rather resembles crushed Weetabix.

@chrisiow we've had plenty of rain recently after that long hot,dry spell, but even then (as this morning) we were getting good dews which kept things going
