Flying away

I'm still practicing on getting birds in flight. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I tried to use a fast shutter speed, but I don't think the duck is very clear.
It takes lots of practice...I have been practicing on following birds in the line of site...if your camera has an always focus setting, use it. Go where there are lots of birds...gulls, pigeons, ducks, geese...any type because some will always move and come back. I find gulls great to practice on, they all take baths at the similar times, lots of wing action. Fun to shoot them, even if you don't like gulls. I never did like them, but have grown fond of them. :-)

@laurieewilson thanks for the pointers. I usually have to drive to a nearby pond to find geese and ducks. Haven't seen many gulls around here.

Your timing on this shot is excellent. That's the most important thing. The rest is just a little matter of technique. I too am trying to perfect my bird pictures. Especially birds in flight, which are very tough. And the small ones are tougher because they are both small and tend to dart around so quickly. But in general terms, it's best to set your camera's ISO setting to the highest value that you trust on your particular camera. This makes your camera more light sensitive. The goal is to enable your camera to shoot at BOTH fast shutter speeds and fairly high f/stop. As you seem to know, the fast shutter speed will tend to stop the action of the wings flapping or bird moving across the frame. The higher F/Stop will make precise focusing more forgiving. Then, the simplest thing to do is to set the camera's exposure setting to P (Program). Are you familiar with how to adjust the Exposure Value (shutter speed and f/strop inversely) in the P(Program) mode by using the Command Dial? If you will just let me know, I will explain what to do next.
