Checkin out my reflection

When this Egret shook his head after looking at its reflection, I could see these long, silky, whispy looking plumes of feathers coming off its back. I've never noticed them before! Maybe it's just in Spring?

Question: looking for advice - when trying to get a clear reflection as well, do you focus on the water, somewhere inbetween or just the subject?

(For this I used auto focus, focused on the bird, and then recentered my picture). This was also from pretty far away, and used my telephoto lens. Its grainy because I cropped it so the photo wasn't majority water/grass.
What a great capture!

I think you get to choose - either are nice though probably the reflection being softer is better if you have to choose one or the other. Nice shot.

Could be molting? I don't know about Egrets but other species seem to loose feathers, fur and skin getting ready for summer. Don't quote me on this. :)
