St Columba landed here and the abbey was gradually built from the simple days of a settlement when he was here. Thea is a small mound overlooking it where it was said that he had a wooden hut on top and where he wrote his books an dworked. Some wooden shards were discovered decades ago but in those days carbon dating was vastly expensive. Well 5 weeks ago , having decided to have the bits analysed, they got the results that the pieces were dated to the time that Columba had his hut there. Science is fascinating and exciting when historical 'stories' can become fact.
