A couple of weeks ago I posted a picture of this Northern Flicker, along with his mate, digging a hole in a birch tree for a nest. Now it is almost finished, the male is adding a few finishing touches, and soon it will be ready for the female to lay her eggs. She was sitting on a branch a few feet away supervising. I am very much hoping to get some shots of the chicks when they hatch but I fear that leaves growing on the tree will hide them from view.

Wow, amazing shot great focus and really nice that he’s looking right at you. It’s amazing that you’re getting leaves on this tree, I would think it might be a bit soft and rotten if these Northern Flickers have chosen it for their home.
