I went to the Greenway for about an hour today. I watched this little waterbird hunting fish and insects for most of that time. It's a Yellow-Crowned Night-Heron. I was lucky to get to see it. They are rare in our area.
The water was really low. It's standing in water, but you can't tell because of all the water plants.
On my short visit, I saw ducks, a beaver, squirrels, dragonflies, and three snakes. I'm still trying to identify the snakes. They were three sizes of the same type. I took pics, but I was up high on the walkway. it still creeped me out!!!
Thank you so much for your comments, views, and faves for yesterday's spider pic!!! :0)
Very pretty bird!! How neat that you got to watch it for that long! The snakes would probably creep me out a little as well. They didn't bother me until I saw a GRASS snake with a TOAD in it's mouth...my opinion changed of them that day. :-x
Ahem...same bird as mine. @Girlie was the one that named it for me. Then I see YOUR bird...which has a neck...and mine clearly does NOT! So I Googled images of the yellow crowned heron, and apparently they come in the neck and no-neck varieties. Who knew? Great capture of the necked variety, BTW.
Cool! I didn't know what my bird was, until I got home and looked on the Tennessee Watchable Wildlife site. I went back and looked at yours again. They are the same bird. How cool is that! :0)
What a cutie! I like the shadow...
A beaver!! Holy Batman! I'm here in the 'Beaver state' and have never even seen one! (except on the Oregon flag..LOL)
good shot.
