Defintiely can say that it is a Cardinal - there are so many shots from the USA - not anywhere else though that I can recall! Particularly nice bird focus!
John, it is a Cardinal, and it is a male. The female of the species is a grayish to brown color. We have many of them in our area; in fact they are the one of the most plentiful here. You did a terrific job capturing this one!
The bright cardinal makes such a beautiful contrast to the surrounding muted greens; this is an awesome photo! I believe that you actually are right on both counts: Redbird is the colloquial name for Northern cardinal. Anyway, wonderful pic!
